The DuMont Manchu 20 inch Direct View TV with AM/FM and Record Player was the largest direct view television available in 1947. It used the DuMont 20BP4 picture tube, which was the largest diredt-view picture tube available in 1947. Because the picture tube was so long, DuMont designed a special rotating cabinet so that the set could be swiveled into a more compact footprint when not in use. The photo above shows the set in it's "non-operating" position with the oriental green side displayed.

The special rotating mechanism allowed the set to swivel 180 degrees which gave the set the ability to have 2 non-operating positions. This shows the mahagony non-operating side which is oposite the green side in the photo above.

IN the photo above we see the set in the "Operating-Position" with the cabinet doors closed. When these doors are opened, the picture tube and controls are revealed. You will note that the set is now sticking out from the wall behind, a lot farther than it is when the set is swiveled into the non-operating position. And in this view the cabines it quite a bit more narrow.

The photo above shows the set with the doors open in the normal operating position. The record player is mounted in a drawer that slides out on the lower left below the picture tube.

And here is the set operating. The picture on the screen is a bit washed out due to the sunlight comming in through the picture window in my living room which is on the right in this photo. This set was restored by Chuck Azalolina prior to my purchase of the set.
